Officials of Ukrainian Railways Were Mining Crypto at Employer’s Expense

A Lviv Railway unit, branch of state-owned Ukrainian Railways (Ukrzaliznytsia) was illegally mining crypto using the power grid of the state.

Lviv Railway unit used its electricity to plug in more than 100 pieces of crypto mining devices to mine Bitcoin.

Organized by officials of the Lviv Railway unit, the grid-operating mining farm was discovered by Ukrzaliznytsia’s security department and local prosecutors.

Estimated electricity losses in 2019 accounted for around $41K. As the issuance and circulation of crypto in Ukraine are banned, criminal proceedings have been initiated for the case.

As a reminder, this August, the Security Service of Ukraine arrested power plant operators for mining crypto at a local nuclear power plant facility.
